6 Tips to Keep Your Babies and Kids Cooler in Lombok Sun

If you're traveling to Lombok with a baby or young child, you already know that paradise comes with a catch….the heat. The good news? With the right preparation and the right baby gear, you can have an incredible trip without spending half of it wiped out by the sun. At Vagababy Lombok, we work with families every day who are navigating exactly this and we've pulled together the tips that actually make a difference. Here's what works...

1. Time Your Outdoor Adventures Wisely
The sun in Lombok is at its most brutal between 10am and 3pm. Head out before 9 am when the air is still cool and the light is gorgeous, then retreat indoors or into the shade during the midday heat. Late afternoon, usually from around 4pm onwards, the temperature drops, the light turns soft and golden, and kids tend to get a second wind after an afternoon nap anyway. It sounds like a small change, but re-arranging your schedule around the sun rather than against it makes family travel in the tropics so much more enjoyable.
2. Dress Them Right — Light, Loose, and Sun-Smart
What your child wears matters enormously in tropical heat. Forget anything tight, dark, or synthetic. Think light colors, natural fabrics, and loose fits that let air move around the body, Linen and cotton are your best friends. They're breathable, they dry quickly, and they keep kids comfortable even when the temperature climbs.
A long-sleeved cotton rash top paired with shorts is actually cooler than a T-shirt in direct sun, because it protects skin without requiring heavy sunscreen reapplication every hour.
A wide-brimmed hat is non-negotiable. For babies who are at the stage of yanking everything off, look for styles with a chin strap. UPF-rated swimwear is also worth investing in if you're spending time at the beach or pool. It takes the pressure off sunscreen slightly and is a much more practical option for wriggly little ones.
3. Hydration Is Everything
Hot weather increases fluid loss rapidly, especially in active kids who are running around on the beach. For breastfed babies, the guidance is to offer more frequent feeds in hot weather rather than supplementing with water. Breast milk adjusts to meet your baby's needs, including hydration, so feeding on demand is the way to go.
For toddlers and older kids, make drinking water part of the rhythm of the day. Bring a good insulated water bottle and offer it regularly rather than waiting until they say they're thirsty. Water-rich snacks like watermelon, cucumber, and mango are all readily available in Lombok and most kids love them.
4. Create Shade Wherever You Go — A Good Stroller Helps
The problem is that shade isn't always available exactly where you need it. A quality stroller with a large sun canopy gives you shade on the move without having to think about it.
At Vagababy Lombok, we offer well-maintained strollers that are perfect for navigating Lombok's mix of paved streets and bumpy paths, with canopies that do a solid job of blocking the midday glare. Hiring locally means you skip the airport baggage stress entirely, one of those little wins that genuinely improves the start of a holiday. For beach days, a portable UV beach tent or shade shelter is one of those items that feels like a luxury until you have it and then you can't imagine travelling without it. It gives babies somewhere safe to nap, play, and rest out of direct sun while you actually get to enjoy the beach.

5. Cool Down at the Villa with an Inflatable Pool
One of the best things about staying in a villa in Lombok is having your own private space. An inflatable pool set up in the shade of your villa is genuinely one of the most effective ways to keep babies and toddlers cool during the hottest part of the day.
Vagababy Lombok hires out inflatable pools that are the perfect size for little ones to splash around in safely. Fill it up, add some water toys, and you've suddenly got a very happy toddler who's cooling down instead of overheating, while you get to relax close by rather than sweating it out on a beach.

6. Don't Underestimate Sunscreen
Sunscreen is essential, but it's also one of those things parents often get slightly wrong. A few key things to know:
Babies under six months should not use sunscreen. Their skin is too sensitive and they absorb chemicals more readily. For very young babies, the answer is always shade and protective clothing rather than SPF.
For babies over six months and children, use a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) rated SPF 50+. Mineral sunscreens sit on top of the skin rather than being absorbed, which makes them safer for kids and also more effective in water.
Apply it generously; most people use about half the amount they actually need and reapply every two hours, or more frequently if kids are swimming or sweating. Don't forget ears, the back of the neck, the tops of feet, and the back of the hands. These are the spots that almost always get missed.
Reef-safe options are widely available now and are the right choice for Lombok's marine environment, especially if you're snorkeling or swimming near coral.
